Rider Report

With solid performances in the East Stroudsburg Open and this past weekend's Keystone Classic, as well as big win in their opener over Lock Haven University, the Rider University wrestling program has gotten their 2008-2009 season off to a strong start.

Leading the charge for the Broncs has been senior captain Jason Lapham.  A graduate of Beekmantown High School in  New York where he was a four-time NY State placer, Lapham transferred to Rider from Penn State last season and has been a huge contributor.

Lapham opened the 08-09 campaign by going 5-0 to win the 165-pound weight class championship at the East Stroudsburg Open, defeating Penn's Andrew Coles in the finals, 6-3.

The second week of the season saw him pick up a 4-0 win over Lock Haven's Dave Richmond in the Broncs 27-16 win over the Bald Eagles.  Lapham was right back on the mats two days later in Philadelphia, taking 2nd place at the Keystone Classic.

For the season, Lapham is tied for the team lead in wins with Fred Rodgers (9-4, 4th @ ESU, 5th @ Keystone) and Nick Weaver (Central Regional / 9-5, 6th @ ESU, 5th @ Keystone) with nine.

Another Bronc off to a strong start is redshirt junior Michael Kessler.  A two-time NCAA Tournament qualifier, Kessler is 8-2 on the year with 2nd place finishes at the Keystone Classic and East Stroudsburg Open.

A trio of true freshmen from New Jersey have gotten off to excellent starts at the collegiate level for the Broncs as well.

Filiberto Colon (Belleville) registered a huge pin for the Broncs in their win over Lehigh, and placed at both the East Stroudsburg Open and Keystone Classic, taking 4th and 5th respectively, giving him a 7-4 start with four of his wins coming by pin at 125.

At 197, Tyler Smith (Belvidere) picked up a pair of 5th place finishes at East Stroudsburg and the Keystone, and is tied for 2nd on the team with eight wins.

The 2008 NJ State Champion at 125 pounds, Jimmy Kirchner (Somerville) participated in the East Stroudsburg Open.  Kirchner picked up five wins, including two by pin, on his way to a 6th place finish.

Other wrestlers making strong contributions for the Broncs include at 133 pounds, Tommy Lorenzo (West Orange / 6-3, 3rd @ ESU) and Matt Bradley (Jackson Memorial / 3-3, 6th @ Keystone), at 141, Aaron Nestor (5-4, 7th @ ESU, 6th @ Keystone), 174-pounder Joe Ferber (4-5), and heavyweight Ed Bordas (6-3, 3rd @ Keystone).

Rutgers Report

With five placers at the Oklahoma Gold / Brockport Open, eight at the Binghamton Open, and a nice showing at the 2008 Sprawl and Brawl Duals,  the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers have gotten themselves off to a good start in year two of the Scott Goodale era.

True freshman Scott Winston (Jackson Memorial) has been solid in his first year at the collegiate level.  After dropping his very first match to Oklahoma's Chad Terry at Brockport, Winston won out to take 3rd place avenging his loss to Terry with a 4-3 win in the wrestleback final.  A week later, Winston would go 5-1 at the Binghamton Open for another 3rd place finish.  For the season, Winston leads the team in wins at 9-4, with three of his four losses coming to nationally ranked wrestlers.

Three Scarlet Knights are tied for 2nd on the team with eight wins.

Redshirt senior Mike Whalen (Parsippany - 174) recorded seven of his eight wins at the tournaments in Brockport and Binghamton, placing 3rd and 4th respectively.  He also added a win in Rutgers 21-15 triumph over Clarion at the Sprawl and Brawl Duals.

Six of Kellen Bradley's (Kittatinny) eight wins came at the Binghamton Open where he went 6-1 on the day for a 5th place finish at 149.

Sean Dedeyn (Central Regional), a redshirt sophomore at heavyweight picked up four wins at both the Binghamton Open and the Buffalo Open, finishing in 3rd place in the latter.

Leading the team in pins with four is redshirt sophomore Dave Greenwald (St. Mary's).  Greenwald won both his matches at Brockport via fall, and added two more at the Sprawl and Brawl duals.

The Knights are schedules to return to the mats this Saturday for the Hoosier Duals at Indiana University.

TCNJ Report

A perennial power in Division 3, The College of New Jersey Lions wrestling team is once again showing that they will be a Division 3 contender in 2008-2009.

TCNJ has jumped out to a 4-0 start in dual action, crowned five champions at the Ursinus Fall Brawl, and had eleven wrestlers finish in the top four on their way to a 2nd place finish as a team at the Red Dragon Invitational.

Five wrestlers are tied for the team lead with twelve wins through the first two weeks of the season: John Barnett (Jefferson), Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill East), Ed Broderick (Southern), Joey Falco (Ocean Township), and Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick).  Osgoodby, who picked up his 100th career victory last week in the dual against Yeshiva, is the Lions' lone remaining unbeaten.

Dan DiColo (Mount Olive), Anthony Rizzolo (Deptford), and Mike Denver (Central Regional) are next on the list for TCNJ with eleven wins.  Denver, also leads the team in pins with seven.

Darrion Caldwell & Kody Hamrah Update

Big day for NC State's 4th-ranked Darrion Caldwell (Rahway) and Kody Hamrah (Bishop Ahr) on the mats at the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.  While the Wolfpack dropped all three of their matches, Caldwell and Hamrah went 3 for 3 on the day.  In the opener, Caldwell and Hamrah were the only two NC State wrestlers to win in a 40-7 loss to #9 Illinois.  Caldwell picked up a big win as he knocked off #14 Troy Tirapelle by a score of 8-4,  while Hamrah picked up bonus for the Wolfpack with a 13-5 major over Grant Paswall.

Caldwell made quick work of Michigan State's redshirt freshman Dave Cheza, recording a pin in 1:06 and Hamrah added a 7-3 victory over Kyle Bounds in the Wolfpack's loss to the Spartans, 23-13.

In NC State's final dual of the evening against 12th-ranked Wisconsin, Caldwell beat his 2nd ranked opponent of the day, with an 8-4 decision over #7 Kyle Ruschell.  Hamrah followed with his third win of the day, a 6-3 decision over highly-touted true freshman Ben Jordan, a three-time Ohio state champion.  The Wolfpack split bouts with Wisconsin, but the Badgers registered five bonus points to grab the 20-15 win.
